Beijing Zoo and aquarium

The Beijing Zoo (Chinese: 北京动物园) Beijing Zoo is situated in Beijing Xizhimen West. Short after the founding of the People’s Republic of China the Zoo’s name was Western Suburbs Park. The areas of the park have a classic look, similar to many Chinese gardens with flowers and natural scenery containing trees and pools. Since 1955 the zoo has rapidly developed. The zoo covers more than 50,000 square meters with a variety of wild and rare animals of China. The zoo also also serves as a zoological research centre which studies rare animals from different continents.

The zoo has over 7,000 creatures of 600 different species from all over the world and the buildings in the zoo are divided into 30 large halls, with a monkey hall, panda hall, lion and tiger hall, elephant hall and many more. In the zoo you can find bears, lions, tigers, pandas, elephants, birds, giraffes, gorilla and much more. Next to animals the zoo also contains many different trees and plants. The Beijing zoo also has an Ocean Hall, which was opened in 1999. It is the biggest ocean hall in China (35,000 square meters) with a wide range of fish species. The ocean hall is located in the north-east of the zoo. The shape of the hall, an ocean trumpet shell, makes visitors associate the hall with the sea. The Ocean hall has several zones: The Reading Hall, Ocean Library, Ocean Theatre, Shark Hall and Tropical Rain Forest Hall. The hall also provides a entertaining sea animal show and dynamic ocean bottom.
